The Two Ways to Qualify

You also need a current, unencumbered U.S. RN or APRN license. Hours can be earned through three pathways: Direct Care (bedside), Tele-critical Care, or the Knowledge Professional pathway (educators, CNSs, and others who influence care).
Which Hours Actually Count
- Counts: bedside hours caring for acutely or critically ill patients — ICU, CVICU, MICU, SICU, neuro ICU, trauma ICU, and comparable tele-critical care time.
- Counts with a catch: orientation hours count only when you were the assigned primary nurse for the patient.
- Location rule: hours must be completed in the U.S. or Canada, or in a facility holding Magnet or Joint Commission International status.
- Doesn't count: pure administrative shifts, classroom time, and hours where most of your patients were not critically ill.
Rule of thumb: a full-time ICU nurse (three 12s a week ≈ 1,800 hrs/yr) usually qualifies under the Two-Year Option after about 12 months at the bedside.
