What the CSC Is

The CSC (Cardiac Surgery Certification) is an AACN subspecialty credential for nurses caring for adult cardiac surgery patients during the first 48 hours post-op — CABG, valve repairs/replacements, transplants, and other open-heart recoveries in the CVICU. Like the CMC, it attaches to an active accredited specialty certification (usually your CCRN) and expires when that certification lapses.

The 48-hour rule is the eligibility detail that trips nurses up: only time spent with patients inside their first two post-operative days counts toward the population requirement. High-volume CVICUs that recover fresh hearts nightly accumulate qualifying hours fast; units that keep patients through day 4-5 accumulate them more slowly than raw shift counts suggest.
